Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are specific areas in cities where access for the most polluting vehicles is restricted. Enforcement of low emission zones is done through fines or penalties on non-compliant vehicles entering the zone.
Low Emission Zones were implemented in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen in May 2022. They will begin to be enforced in Glasgow in 2023, with Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen following in 2024.
CoMoUK's ongoing project, Shared Transport for All has received funding for year 2. This project aims to support more people in low-income areas in Glasgow and Edinburgh to LEZ complaint shared transport modes including bike share and car share.
We will be engaging specifically with housing associations and their tenants to distribute discounted nextbike memberships and organise sustainable transport workshops, trials, and information sessions.

Scotland’s cities experience increasing levels of air pollution due to high concentrations of vehicles burning fossil fuels. The LEZs have been put in place to reduce emissions, improve air quality and public health and create space for more sustainable transport modes such as active travel and shared transport.
The following are LEZ compliant vehicles:
Exceptions also exist for blue badge holders, historic vehicles, emergency vehicles, etc. a full breakdown of which is available here.
If you own a vehicle and want to check whether it is compliance, you can use the online vehicle checker tool.
Funding is available to support households and businesses whose vehicles are non-compliant. Funds support the disposal of vehicles or cover 80% of the fees to retrofit your vehicle:
