While mobility hubs are common in many parts of continental Europe, in the UK they are a new but growing concept. CoMoUK started the pop-up mobility hubs project with the aim of demonstrating the potential of mobility hubs in a UK context.
In 2023/24 and 2024/25 the project ran in two phases with funding from Paths for All’s Active Nation and Smarter Choices, Smarter Places’ Open Funds, grant funds of Transport Scotland.
In 2025/26, we secured funding through the People & Place grant of Transport Scotland, a fund with the aim of supporting more people in Scotland to walk, wheel or cycle for short, local journeys. The fund enabled us to expand the project and work with 3 different Regional Transport Partnerships (RTPs) across Scotland – South East of Scotland Transport Partnership (SEStran), Tayside and Central Scotland Transport Partnership (Tactran) and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).
Phase two of the project ran between April 2025 and March 2026. We had 4 hubs in circulation, one each for the SEStran and Tactran regions and two under SPT. 12 pop-ups in total were delivered, with the time of the hubs spent at each site ranging from four to nine weeks.
This year, the focus was on tailoring the pop-ups to align with the objectives of regional transport partnerships and local authority partners: we collaborated with 7 different local authorities, working to fit the pop-ups to support ongoing active travel projects in each area.
Engaging with the community was crucial for the success of the hubs. Free active travel activities for the pop-ups were delivered in partnership with local community organisations such as cycling groups, walking groups, bike shops, community centres and transport charities.
Project partners for the 2025/26 project year included:
Community groups and organisations that helped to host and promote the hubs included but were not limited to: North Edinburgh Arts, Teri Bikes, Cycling UK East Lothian, Haddington Bikes, FEL Scotland, Recycke-a-bike, The Bike Station, Co Wheels, NG Homes, Ayrshire Roads Alliance, Community Gift Exchange (CGX), Bikepost, Bike for Good, Dynamo CIC, St. Paul’s Youth Forum, Young Movers.
